Tartine Bakery

Tartine Bakery

San Francisco

Tartine Bakery & Cafe, located in San Francisco's Mission District, is a beloved neighborhood institution that draws fans from all over the world as well as from down the block. Husband-and-wife team, Chad Robertson and Elisabeth Prueitt, opened the bakery in 2002.  Inspired by the French open face sandwich, they named their place Tartine.  The establishment is a bakery, bread shop, and cafe that is dedicated to simplicity, perfection, and seasonality.  Grounded in Californian ideals but informed by French techniques, the bakery is a beloved spot for locals and tourists alike.  Many rush to Tartine for the croissants, bread pudding, or slice of cake.  Beyond sweets, the bakery also serves savory items, including hot pressed sandwiches served on Robertson’s bread.  Starting at 4:30pm, a growing line appears as avid customers wait to pick up a freshly baked loaf of bread, which might range from regular country to whole wheat walnut to cracked rye porridge bread.  Tartine has evolved from a neighborhood spot to a celebrated bakery and cafe helmed by two pioneers in the industry.
