Pennyroyal Farm

Pennyroyal Farm

Boonville, CA
Founded by Sarah Cahn Bennet, Pennyroyal Farm’s vineyard was planted in 2008 and 2009 with 23 acres of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Sarah’s parents, Ted Bennett and Deborah Cahn of Navarro Vineyards and Winery started farming wine grapes in the Anderson Valley in 1973. For years, the family owned an undeveloped 100-acre parcel in Boonville, that was primarily used as a hay field.

The vineyard is divided into seven blocks, since they often vinify every acre as a separate lot to capture the variations in the soil profile. The trellis is the modern “V-top” that Navarro has used for all new or replanted fields in the last decade, so the entire vineyard is capable of being weeded and suckered by Babydoll sheep.

Pennyroyal Farm is named after the wild mint that thrives in the vineyards. Sheep have been in residence at our family’s Boonville farm for over a quarter of century, but it wasn’t until 2006 that they decided to grow wine grapes and make cheese. Pennyroyal Farm is designed to minimize fossil fuel use and maximize the symbiotic relationships of diversified crops and animal husbandry. We also utilize solar panels on our barn to supply the farm's electricity.
