Bad Walter's

Bad Walter's

Oakland, CA

Bad Walter’s began as an underground pandemic pop-up in founder Sydney Arkin’s Oakland living room—an operation so beloved that pints sold out in minutes each week, earning the nickname “bootleg ice cream.” After its inevitable shutdown by the health department, the brand evolved through several iterations before opening its first official shop in Rockridge in 2024. Today, Bad Walter’s continues to embrace its scrappy, creative roots while producing ice cream entirely from scratch and spinning it fresh every day.

Known for its whacky, maximalist flavors, Bad Walter’s has built a reputation for playful combinations packed with generous mix-ins, bold textures, and unexpected swirls. Their approach channels the uninhibited imagination of childhood—like raiding the kitchen at midnight and mixing together whatever looks fun. This sense of joyful experimentation is at the heart of every pint.

Bad Walter’s uses real dairy but ensures their ice cream is lactose-free by adding an enzyme that breaks down lactose sugars. This allows a wider range of guests to enjoy their full-flavor creations without sacrificing taste or texture. Their commitment to crafting inventive, high-quality ice cream—combined with a philosophy rooted in fun, nostalgia, and pure enjoyment—sets Bad Walter’s apart as one of the Bay Area’s most distinctive modern ice cream makers.
