Spring may be coming to a close, but that doesn't mean an end to enjoying artichokes one last time -- in their mysteriously beautiful and curious flowers! Artichokes and cardoons are closely related, both the same species of plant belonging to the Aster family, also known as the sunflower family--a group of composite-flowering plants. The artichokes we eat are actually just the flower buds before they come into bloom. Once they do, the flower buds become inedible, instead putting on a wonderful display which also makes a great cut flower, having a vase life of over 10 days.
Change their water and trim their stems periodically to prolong their lives. Use warm water in the vase! Keep out of direct sunlight.
