Jolie-Laide, based in Sonoma County, California, is a boutique winery founded by Scott and Jenny Schultz, whose journey into winemaking was driven by a deep appreciation for unconventional beauty. Named after the French term jolie-laide, meaning βpretty-ugly,β the winery embraces the unexpected in its wines, which are crafted with a natural approach. Scott, a former sommelier for Thomas Keller, and Jenny, with a background in chemistry and winemaking from UC Davis, joined forces after meeting at a Sebastopol winemaking facility.
Jolie-Laideβs winemaking process is simple yet meticulous: they source from select vineyards, use whole-cluster grapes, foot-crush, and age in neutral oak barrels. The wines ferment with native yeasts, and only minimal sulfur is added before bottling. This minimalist approach allows the wine to express each vineyardβs unique character and vintage, resulting in a lineup of thoughtfully crafted wines that highlight the purity and nuance of Californiaβs terroir.
